News and Offers

Since 2001, the Mental Health Foundation has been leading World Mental Health Day – bringing the UK together to focus on getting good mental health. This year, the theme is mental health in catastrophes and emergencies.

This World Mental Health Day (Friday 10th October), we’re shining a light on the importance of protecting our mental wellbeing in times of crisis.

Catastrophes and emergencies can be overwhelming, disrupting routines, safety, and stability. In these moments, it’s vital to find ways to care for our minds as well as our bodies, from grounding techniques and moments of calm to seeking professional help when needed. Looking after your mental health during difficult times can build resilience, restore a sense of control, and help you move forward with strength and hope.

When facing catastrophes or emergencies, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or hopeless. These experiences can disrupt routines, safety, and even our sense of control. That’s why caring for your mental health during these times is just as important as protecting your physical health. Looking after your wellbeing can help you stay calm, think clearly, make better decisions, and recover more effectively when the crisis has passed.

10 Tips to Support Your Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies:

1) Stay informed but limit exposure: Follow reliable updates, but avoid constant news scrolling to reduce anxiety.

2) Stick to a routine: Familiar patterns, even small ones, bring comfort and a sense of control

3) Connect with others: Reach out to family, friends, or support groups – talking reduces feelings of isolation.

4) Practice grounding techniques: Slow breathing, naming objects around you, or mindful exercises can help regulate stress.

5) Look after your body: Eat regularly, stay hydrated, and rest when you can; physical care supports mental resilience.

6) Move when possible: Light stretching, walking, or simple exercises release stress and lift mood.
